Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to contest particular calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
