The Generosity of People We Don't Know: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Assisted Me Land the Job That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Since my friend was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a large ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the canteen, where we grabbed food, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Beside me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did, and I told him that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an research lab at Columbia University – right next door to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, returning to the canteen that after dark. The engineering student approached me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but straight off explained to my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a city where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his name, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an elite institution and ask for a job. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
