19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been earned on hardcourt
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev secured his first trophy for over two years with a win over Corentin Moutet in the competition title decider.
The athlete, a former top-ranked player, has had a difficult period, winning just one win at the big events and experiencing a difficult moment at the New York tournament.
His unpredictability on the professional circuit - and issues with his serving in particular - caused him dropping out of the top ten and eventually splitting with long-time mentor Gilles Cervara.
Now training with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has gradually advanced in the last few weeks - climaxing in a hard-fought competitive victory over opponent Moutet.
This represents Medvedev's first trophy after the Italian tournament and maiden on a hardcourt since that period of 2023.
Victory also indicates he has won 21 championships at 21 different competitions.
"It's the first time I'm at a competition with my two daughters simultaneously, so to win a championship is particularly special," commented world number 14 the champion.
"This championship is in tribute of my younger daughter her name, because the maiden victory I achieved when my child my daughter was delivered was for her."
The tennis star, the former major winner, had lost his previous six finals, featuring in that event previously this season.
The player's counter-punching strategy and regular reactions on the playing surface had led observers to doubt if his skill to perform at the top level was finished.
Yet the 29-year-old has made changes in the last few weeks, making an effort to advance forward and play assertively, reinforced by an better service.
He recovered from a break down in the opening set against the difficult opponent, securing four of the final five games to go ahead.
The competitors exchanged service breaks in the middle set before the challenger, striving for his first professional victory, seized the initiative to force a final set.
The opponent saved 4 early-game opportunities in a competitive deciding set before the Russian broke to that score to close out the victory.
Fittingly, the winner earned victory with a point at the net area, with his opponent unable to control a shot after a lengthy match.
