Prime Small Screen Choices: 7 Must-Watch Movies In the Days Ahead

Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

Coralie Fargeat's bold critique addresses the demanding standards for women's appearance along with the perceived horrors of advancing years. The veteran actress presents a brilliant portrayal playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress forced into presenting a workout series on the small screen. Pushed out thanks to her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a secretive and terrifying treatment titled "The Substance". This generates a youthful duplicate called Sue, culminating in an increasingly vampiric relationship between them. October 17th, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This suspenseful story features the talented actress in the role of Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for a break from writing about international wars to join an opulent ship accompanied by a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and charitable figure, her husband, and other filthy rich guests. However when an enigmatic female disappears from the ship during the evening and everyone denies she ever existed, her journalistic curiosity awaken. Available now, Netflix

Presence Film

Steven Soderbergh tests his film-making abilities through this nifty paranormal narrative shot entirely from the perspective of the phantom. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their recent residence, the camera – representing the ghost – follows them around. The teen shows signs of aware of the poltergeist, and it seems guarding her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. October 11th, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

This Self-Referential Film

Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame via this meta comedy caper. He portrays a narcissistic celebrity called Nicolas Cage who agrees to a $1m payday to visit a festive event in Mallorca for billionaire superfan Javi. Hired by government spies to gather intel on the potential kingpin, the actor's unique performing skills comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone

The director's contained scarefest holds up well without requiring a follow-up. Set in 1978 Denver, multiple kidnappings has left the children on edge. When Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and held captive in a cellar, he anticipates a terrible outcome. However, the non-functional line on the wall keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, and the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, late evening, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the battle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for Mammon in Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who declares early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple commence profiting from the nation's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, bad makeup and bad faith, yet the lead actress manages to present the real-life figure in a likable light. October 14th, early morning, the Film4 channel

Black Bag

The current week's another release from Steven Soderbergh presents a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars sported by the actor's intelligence officer. He is tasked to discover a mole within their ranks out of five possibilities – one of whom is his spouse. The two stars are masters of calm composure, so a delicious mind game of deception or honesty unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, the Sky channel
