Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
